"Adequate facilities overall but poor value for money and a long distance from the city centre on foot." (107116000)

Some members of staff were freindly. The hotel was generally very clean.

The shower was very bad, barely a dribble. Breakfast was not served after 9 and as I had a number of late nights I was unable to get breakfast in the morning. The fire alarm went off and I was accused of smoking in my room, I was not. The room was also cold.

    "Not pleasent in general." (108098729)

The location to the city centre.

There was no hot water in the room to wash in. The shower was also not very hot. We were given no choice of the cooked breakfast. Check out time was too early, not very good that the bill had to be settled on arrival, the recption staff were not very helpful, not a very good choice of complementry tray. Breakfast was cold and not cooked fresh, we were still eating ceral and the cooked breakfast arrived at the table. The whole breafast experience felt rushed.

"one night only, but quite sufficient." (107144622)

hot water for shower, comfy bed, lots of room, easy access to downtown, friendly helpful staff (called cab for me for very! early flight)

unless I was doing these things wrong - a little more power in the shower & the alarm clock didn't seem to work. I did have my own though. Forgot to ask if there was a lift. I had one flight of stairs with my suitcase (only one!)

The Hotel is very good but see below

The roon was good but I missed confortable , not too expensive , arms chais in the roon and a better TV set.

  • 3/10 James ( Young couple)

from Market harborough , GB  on  October 7, 2007

"This hotel is 10 minute walk from the city centre. Generally it was dated and desperately in need of a complete refurbishment. There was a small bar, but we never saw anybody drinking in it. We suspect we were also bitten by something in the bed during the night. When booking it would be informative to have known when the hotel was last refurbished including recent photo's of all areas." (97171294)

    Close to city centre.

The shower was blocked, the room was cold & the whole hotel was very much in need of a refurbishment. Very expensive for the quality of the accommodation.

"The prize is rather high for the peripherical location. It is a high-street prize!. The accomodation is OK." (99404439)

The information regarding the location is misleading. The hotel is not in 15-min walk of the center.

It was reasonably clost to Princes Street.

The shower did not work and breakfast was ok, but certainly not the best we have had!

  • 10/10 Anonymous ( Group of adult friends)

Very friendly staff, good breakfast, excellent location

very weak shower pressure with water going from hot to cold. Several times I had to ring the front doorbell continuously before anyone answered.

"The hotel was easy to find but getting into the carpark was a bit tricky. I would have liked some help with the suitcases, as there was no lift and I walk with a stick. However, the staff were pleasant and competent and most helpful in arranging for us to have a continental breakfast in our room (brought up the night before) since we were leaving too early to have breakfast. The room was spotlessly clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and there were plenty of pillows - not something you usually get without asking. Tea/coffee making facilities were available - only 2 biscuits unfortunately. There was a bath, which I like for my aches and pains and my husband said the shower was good too. You can open the windows - brilliant for those of us who like fresh air and there was no problem with noise either from outside or from other rooms. We didn't have the opportunity to use the dining room but it looked very nice. Check in was easy and we just had to leave the keys when we left in the early hours. Overall a very pleasant stay." (3305234299)

The bed was comfortable, the bathroom clean and adequate and the staff were most helpful in providing a continental breakfast for us before the regular breakfast time.

The pink striped wallpaper. No lift and no help was offered carrying large suitcases up to the first floor, although staff could see I was walking with a stick.

"It may be that room 3 is the only room with the problems I encountered (Ive not seen any other rooms in the hotel), but anyone that wants to sleep later than 6am will be sorely disappointed." (3305136973)

    Near town.

Room 3 next to the kitchen is terrible. Anyone There is woken up by the staff first thing in the morning. The toilet/shower area smells terrible, and has very low quality linoleum floor.

"It was quite expensive because of the music festival in Edinburgh." (3304947735)

    The location. Breakfast.

The bathroom was not cleaned on the floor

  • 5/10 Anonymous ( Group of adult friends)

    on  August 18, 2006

"Poor quality given the cost. There seemed to be no-one in charge although the staff were friendly and worked hard. Standard of hygiene in the kitchen was questionable (a visit was necessary by the friends with no cold water.) The cooked breakfast included a smiley potato face which was looked at in bemusement by the foreign guests!" (3304955758)

poor standard of upkeep of hotel. In our group, one had no cold running water and another was unable to get out of the bathroom unless somebody lifted the door up from outside! These were not rectified despite requests to staff. Non-existent water pressure in the attic.

  • 8/10 Craig ( Family with older children)

    from Rotherham , United Kingdom;GB  on  August 12, 2006

"The decor of the hotel was beautiful & the staff were very friendly. There was only one thing that I would change and that would be to serve a different breakfast each morning. Even just a change to the way the eggs were prepared would have made a difference." (3305127358)

The location of the hotel in being able to walk to almost all of the attractions was great for us.

Due to a lot of furniture in the room we were constantly bumping into something when moving around.

  • 5/10 Ian ( Mature couple)

"The hotel is in an ideal location for visiting the undoubted attractions that Ednurgh has to offer. The price charged for one nights Bed & Breakfast was to high. The breakfast was not very good with the fruit juices and milk being warm." (3305053015)

The proximity to Edinburgh City Centre and off road car parking.

The quality of the hotel and the food served did not match the price charged.

  • 5/10 Anthony ( Mature couple)

    from Rothesay , United Kingdom;GB  on  July 9, 2006

"The hotel policy posted on the wall of our room stated that no alcohol was to be consumed in the room. Firstly I consider that what I do in my room is up to me and secondly, why is this not stated as policy on their Internet information? I note in previous reviews the poor quality of breakfast and can report that nothing has changed. Everything was over cooked so that you could bounce the fried egg on the floor and I have never experienced crunchy sausage before either. I will not be returning to the Cumberland Hotel" (3304925473)

The accommodation was clean and adequate

The floor boards were loose and the Lavatory seat was detached from the toilet and looked as though it had been like that for some time. It was also made of wood that was cracked in places, which I do not consider very hygenic

  • 7/10 Anonymous ( Solo leisure traveller)

"First it should be known that it is not Edinburgh proper and requires a cab ride or walk to the station in order to take the train into the heart of the city." (3304895246)

It was on the ground floor. Although a fairly long walk it was in a straight line from the train station.

Although clean it was worn. Drapes and linens could use an update. The staff was friendly but not from the area so could not give informative answers to queries.

  • 8/10 Dorothy ( Group of adult friends)

    no vodka in bar

  • 5/10 Philip ( Mature couple)

    from York , United Kingdom;GB  on  June 8, 2006

"Hotel looks impressive but suspect some of the stars awarded are for facilities such as internet access. Too many little niggles over one weekend - taxi not booked, even though told it had been; instant coffee at breakfast; room not cleaned (although offer to clean it made at about 5.30pm, when we really wanted to rest and get ready for going out in the evening). There needs to be a lot more attention to detail." (3304617790)

Location and ease of getting into Edinburgh's main areas.

Proximity of room to bar; view of rubbish from bedroom windows; quality of breakfast.

  • 7/10 Anonymous ( Solo business traveller)

  • 9/10 John ( Family with older children)

    from Lewisville , United States;US  on  April 28, 2006

"Not really a hotel, more a bed and breakfast. The staff were extremely nice and went out of their way to be helpful. For those of us traveling from the US a description of what a full English breakfast was would have been useful. Information about the local bus system, which stopped right out front, would also have been appreciated." (3304465127)

Spacious room. Didn't have to ask for heat (problem elsewhere we stayed).

Minor things only - low water pressure in the shower, lack of a decent reading light over the bed.

  • 4/10 Stuart ( Family with older children)

View across to the deaf school . Room was quiet without noise from the traffic

Mugs instead of cups for the tea/coffee in the room. More tea/coffee sachets and milks

  • 5/10 Andrew ( Mature couple)

    from Monmouth , United Kingdom;GB  on  November 24, 2005

"Overall a ittle disappointing. Room was not heated when we arrived, breakfast was warm rather than hot and the overall decor of the hotel was tired." (2723463)

    Clean sheets.

Room unheated when arrived, breakfast could have been warmer.

  • 6/10 Errol ( Mature couple)

    from Preston , United Kingdom;GB  on  August 17, 2005

"Food could of been a lot better, breakfast day 1 was cold, breakfast day 2 was brought in on hot plates by owner with cloth to hold plates, expressing that they were hot. When moved ourselves, plates were actually stone cold along with the food again. Quantity of food of 1 sausage, 1 dried up bacon, 1 hard egg, 1 tea spoon beans, 1 hash brown and 1 smiley was more a childs portion that a traditional scottish breakfast." (2553103)

The accommodation was clean and tidy

sort out the dining area, sitting in a conservatory or glass passage way for breakfast on our own felt odd

  • 8/10 Anonymous ( Young couple)

  • 4/10 Anonymous ( Mature couple)

"The room did the job for one night but I would never go back. Simple things like no menu was offered for breakfast- just whether you wanted continental or cooked and you got what was given (in the case of the cooked breakfast. The only plus point about the hotel was it had a car park." (2367876)

general decor looked tired and in need of modernisation

Sound proofing between rooms was exceptionally poor- you could hear people talk and general noise inside

    No telephone facility

  • 8/10 Thomas ( Solo business traveller)

from Groningen , Netherlands  on  March 26, 2005

"Overall I was very happy with the hotel, no real problems at all. Just the uncomfortable chairs, really; and a fridge would have been nice but a luxury. The continental breakfast was tasty, but didn't really fit what I'd usually try and eat. It included bananas, white bread and cakes where I'd have preferred things like wholemeal bread, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, perhaps porridge." (1941741)

Good service, clean and quiet, quite near the centre and an airport bus stop.

No fridge and uncomfortable chairs, the continental breakfast might be a little healthier.
