"Room mix-up on check-in. Took 20 mins for receptionist to fix, because of mix-up, no morning paper delivered to room. Menu very poor in bar. Waitress told us of 'specials' on the menu that night, turned out not to be any because it was Sunday, ordered Soup and a sandwich which took over 40 minutes to arrive. Service in the restaurant for breakfast was much better." (97982721)

"From time of check-in we were impressed. At all times we found staff very helpful & courteous. Our room was very clean and comfortable, if we had one little quibble - it was that we found it quite hot at night. We had breakfast both mornings and there was a very good choice, all tastes were catered for. The hotel is beautifully maintained and we would have no hesitation in recommending it to anybody. We hope to visit Manchester again and this will be top of our list for accomodation." (97658647)

"The rate for the room was good but we found the prices of meals very expensive for what we actually got but perhaps this is the going rate in Manchester? The hotel itself and general surroundings were excellent." (97042884)

    Decor and overall cleanliness

What was the purpose of the glass partition on the bath?

Male staff were friendly, warm and made every effort to be helpful.

Female staff were just cool and professional. They say the right words but didnt mean them. I ordered food through room service, after 50 minutes i enquired again to be told they didnt know what room. Then I believe the food caused my son to get food poisoning. Your staff can testify to his illness the following morning.

Staff were very helpful. Good location.

Very dissapointed with the actual room. Bed seemed very small. Room advertised as "superior" was more like a room i would expect from a Blackpool "bed & breakfast"! Lift out of order for a day!

Day staff really pleasant, welcoming, and helpful.

Night staff reluctant to help - lights not working in the room so asked if I'd move rooms at 02:00am. I had to insist strongly to get anything done. Night manager was helpful though.

"Very stylish old hotel offering good value for money. Good location for all amenities and excellent staff. Views from the rooms are not very good since the hotel is very close to the railway station but the quality of the bedrooms definitly compensates. Rooms overlooking the main road can be noisy due to late drinking disco bar close by. Very good choice at breakfast but the cooked food ( Bacon, eggs etc) were a bit stale and not very nice to eat." (97880868)

Fabulous bedrooms, great reception area and a very nice bar/dining room. Also, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

although there was a large choice at breakfast, the cooked food was a bit stale and not very nice to eat.

The hotel is in a good location not far from the heart of the centre, the Arndale Centre is within walking distance. Breakfast at the hotel was excellent, loads of choice - hot and cold. Drinks at the bar in the evening were not too badly priced also. Rooms comfortable.

No bad points but the hotel is quite big and finding your room can be daunting.

One minor comment - on my booking confirmation it stated that I would have a bottle of wine in my room but this didn't materialise. When I mentioned this on my departure I was then offered a bottle." A clean, quite and very spacious room with everything you required.

As the room was at the back of hotel, there was no view therefore making it a very dark room.

Nice decor, good atria. Good size room, clean

Staff were not helpful. Especially night time staff. Poor english, rude Breakfast was of a poor standard. No leisure facilities. Definitely not 4* service. Barely 2* in terms of service. I will not be using this hotel again unless I am desparate. I certainly will not recommemend staying at this hotel!!!

Perfect, only two thinks that I don't understand. They give me a handicapped person room, and the bathroom was so disconcerting. And someone use my name and my number room to take dinner in the Temple bar, and at the check out, include this in my account. But I realise obout that and don't pay.

"Nicely situated om the edge of the city center. Nice public areas. The girl on reception when we checked in was terrific, a good ambassador for the hotel. £22 for parking was a disgrace and £14 more than I was advised. Noisy unloading of lorrys in the service yard, we got the impression that it went on all night. A noisy couple next door proved the wall sound insulation to be inadequate. Interesting building for anyone like me that has an interest in Civil Engineering or Victoriana." (97331275)

Friendliness of the staff, and a good breakfast. Interesting building.

Small room and small double bed compared to all other hotels that have stayed in. Slight unpleasant smell in the room and all this after an upgrade.

"We had a wonderful weekend, the staff were great and extremely helpful, the only thing we didn't have was a map but that wasn't for long as when we booked in we were given an extremely good map that we carried around all weekend and never got lost once, we really can't complain about anything." (99637242)

The accommodation was clean and very comfortable,a very good size room which is unusual, we had a lovely room, it was an upgrade to a contempary room. It's well worth paying alittle extra.

I didn't dislike anything about the room, we thought it was great, the only thing i'd mention is the lighting could have been alittle brighter, but thats hardly worth complaining about.

"i DO THINK THIS HOTEL WAS GOOD VALUE AND WOIULD NOT STAY THERE AGAIN. CAR PARK WAS TOO FAR AWAY THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN STATED IN WRITE-UP ON INTERNET. ALSO WE WERE 3 ADULTS PARENTS AND 22YEAR OLD WE COULD HAVE HAD ONE ROOM AS THERE WERE 2 DOUBLE BEDS AND SAVED MONEY IF WE HAD KNOWN. THIS WAS JUST AN OVERNIGHT STAY FOR OUR DAUGHTERS GRADUATION BUT I FEEL IT WAS A WASTE OF MONEY AS OUR ROOM SMELT SO BAD WE DID NOTHAVE A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP. WE WOULD BEEN BETTER RESTED STAYING AT HOME AND GETTING UP AT 5 IN THE MORNING TO TRAVEL TO MANCHESTER TO BE THERE ON TIME. SORRY BUT WILL NOT BE STAYING WITH AGAIN. i DID NOT COMPLAIN AS THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE A REPLY FROM YOU. BODDINGTON. E-MAIL boddington5@tiscali.co.uk" (97611392)

A VERY NICE GRAND HOTEL. GOOD SHOWER AND SOFT TOWELS.

FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO FIND THE ROOMS. EXPLANATION NOT ADEQUATE. A MAIZE OF CORRIDORS AND NOT ENOUGH SIGNS OR LIFTS. ONE OF THE ROOMS SMELT EVEN THOUGH IT HAD ALWAYS BEEN LISTED AS NON-SMOKING., NOT PLEASANT TO SLEEP IN. IRON DID NOT WORK IN ROOM. ONLY TWO TEA BAGS. COOKED BREAKFAST WAS DRY AND HAD BEEN STANDING FOR A LONG TIME COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTER. TEA WAS PLENTIFUL AND TOAST.

It is an adventure coming about once every 5 weeks or so to see if the room is modern, Classical, hight ceiling or low, one room or 3!! as was the case once just like being transported back in time, how good was that.Dont ask what the room is going to be like , just waite for the surprise and enjoy." Active hotels, however were very poor, despite sending me confirmation of the booking, three weeks prior to my visit, they had failed to notify the hotel. "This hotel will no doubt appeal to stag/hen parties or builders/workers on contracts nearby but it does not lend itself to special occasions. We booked a reasonably priced room which was adequate for the price. Maybe we expected too much. The place could do with a good paint and decoration and a few smiles." (99290053)

    close to amenities

tatty, smelly stairway (flooded carpet at some point?) lack of air of welcome. Staff simply adequate. If you have meeters and greeters near the door they should meet and greet as opposed to ignore and chat.

The fact that the hotel was a listed building interested us greatly.

We stayed in room 011 and experienced a considerable amount of noise in that we believe our room was adjacent to the aircon extract system.

However, when we enquired againwhen we reached our room, we were told that laundry was not done on a Sunday and we had to wait till Monday. Would have been good if staff gave us more accurate information in the first place. In the end, we had to wash our laundry in the bathtub. We parked quite far from the hotel. We would know next time but this could have been better explained on the web site when booking." (99311785)

The room was very nice, i'd requested a nice room with a view as i had arranged a surprise night away for my husband's birthday.

Other than that experience the stay was fine." (99951179)

The room I booked was one of the larger rooms so I got really what I paid for.

"The hostess at the breakfast buffet was a little confused when we went for breakfast on Saturday march 18,07 @ 10:30am .She asked for our suite number, which I gave her. She Checked her list and circled it. Then asked if we had paid for breakfast? I replied , why would I pay for something I haven't even had yet. she seemed confused. My wife felt un comfartable about this situation. The hostess then had me sign some form of paper and then allowed us to the buffet, which was excellent by the way. The front desk had my credit card on file so I am not sure why you would put your guests in a potentially embarrising situation? We are seasoned travellers and just found that situation un necessary." (99416786)

The style and decore of the suite.

Suite 202, the door stop is behind the door which is ok , but the it is also in front of the closet. This caused me to stub my toe when I was using the clset.
